Develop skillsDevelop skills

DrenchingDairy farming is a highly skilled business.

Many of the skills are learned on the job and through industry organised discussion groups, farm consultants and company representatives.

Farmers develop a range of skills on-farm, such as financial and business planning, human resource management, animal welfare, asset and machinery maintenance, pasture management and fencing skills. These skills are valuable and easily transferable should a young farmer decide to change his or her career in the future.

Most dairy farmers are also keen to see more young people come into the industry and are prepared to spend time mentoring and training them.

For some young Kiwis, it can be a big learning curve but there are a number of industry organisations and groups to help you along the way.
